St. Valentine’s School Competition

The Bernadette Short School of Irish Dancing is pleased to announce that the 7th Annual St. Valentine’s School Competition will be held on Saturday, 12th February, 2011.

The St. Valentine’s Day School Competition is open to all students in the NDG and West Island classes, as well as those in Chateauguay (QC), Shannon (QC), and Champlain Valley (NY).


Beginners and Advanced Beginners will compete in the morning. All first-year Beginners will compete in at least one dance, and up to three. Bernadette or Marie will let the children know which dances they will do. Novice and Open (Prizewinner) competitions will be held in the afternoon. These dancers will enter in their usual Feis dance categories. Preliminary and Championship dancers will have an opportunity to dance in a solo soft shoe and solo hard shoe event for judges comments only and the judge will not rank the dancers. Dancers will have a choice of Reel or Slip Jig in the soft shoe event and Treble Jig or Hornpipe for the hard shoe event.

VENUE: John Abbott College–Casgrain Building, 21275 Lakeshore Road, Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC

From Autoroute 20 Westbound: Take exit 39 toward Boulevard Des Anciens Combattants. Turn left at Boulevard Des Anciens Combattants – becomes rue St-Pierre. Continue on Rue Saint-Pierre. Turn left at Rue Sainte-Anne – becomes Lakeshore road. Turn left at Maple, the college will be to your right.
From Autoroute 20 Eastbound: Take exit 39 toward Boulevard Des Anciens Combattants. Turn right at Boulevard Des Anciens Combattants - becomes rue St-Pierre. Continue on Rue Saint-Pierre. Turn left at Rue Sainte-Anne – becomes Lakeshore road. Turn left at Maple, the college will be to your right.

COSTUMES: Dancers should have already received a costume prior to the Christmas Recitals. If you did not receive one, please advise Marie or Bernadette. Dancers in Novice and Prizewinner are permitted to wear a solo dress if they have one.

“DANCE-OFF FOR CHARITY”
Please help us show our support to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. Each competitive category will have a “dance off” competition where all age groups in that category participate in an additional competition. Dancers in Beginner will dance the Reel, Advanced Beginner will dance the Slip Jig, Novice will dance the Treble Jig and Open will dance the Hornpipe. If a dancer has dances in two different categories, he or she should enter the dance-off competition in the higher category. Preliminary and Championship dancers will dance the Treble Reel. The cost to enter this competition is $10 and all proceeds will be donated to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

ADMISSION: $5 per adult. Dancers and children under 16 are free.

A Feis Café will be open and this will be an area where you can enjoy a coffee and a treat while waiting for results and awards.

COMPETITION SCHEDULE:

Morning: To start at 9:00a.m.

BEGINNER: Any dancer who started dancing in September 2010.

ADVANCED BEGINNER: Any dancer who started dancing before September 2010, but has not placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in that particular dance in Advanced Beginner Category.

Afternoon: To start at 12:00 noon

NOVICE: Any dancer who has placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in that particular dance in Advanced Beginner, but has not placed 1st in Novice.

PRIZEWINNER: Any dancer who has placed 1st in that particular dance in Novice.

PRELIMINARY & OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
