West Island Christmas Recital

Upon completion of the solo and ceili dress rehearsal,there will be a regular practice – CEILI 2:30PM-3:30PM and SOLO 3:30PM-5PM (TJ & HP).

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2011

ALL DANCERS U16 & OLDER – 2PM - 4PM (approx.)

Upon completion of the solo and ceili dress rehearsal, therewill be a regular practice – CEILI 4PM-5PM and SOLO 5PM-6:30PM (TJ & HP).

IMPORTANT:

Dancers should arrive promptly at the indicated time above.

Dancers should arrive with SOLO hair and makeup already done (including tanner if applicable). It is important that hair and makeup are done as it will be at the Oireachtas so that we can advise any changes necessary. This applies to all dancers, regardless of whether they have danced at previous Oireachtasi or not.

Please ensure that all dress alterations are completed and necessary accessories have been purchased prior to this date. If you have any questions regarding your dancers’ requirements, please speak to Marie, Bernadette, Anne Marie or Katie in the next week or so.

School dresses and hair bands will be distributed shortly for ceili events.

Both solo and ceili events will be performed at the dress rehearsal so be sure to bring dresses and accessories for both.

Tips for makeup for teenage dancers:

matching your eye shadow to your dress colour is not necessarily recommended
accentuating the eyes with more natural colours, eye-liner and mascara is more effective
a bronzer and blush is recommended as nerves can sometimes take the colour out of a dancers complexion

Tips for bun wigs:

dancers’ own hair should be tightly tied near the top of the back of the head with loose hairs secured with spray/gel
not all U9 4-Hands will be wearing wigs. Bernadette will let you know if you require a bun wig

Tips for full wigs:

a hair doughnut should be used at the top of the wig to add height
the wig should not be too far forward or too far back
hair accessories should be set into the wig with curls all around

If you are unsure of any of the above, please see Marie, Bernadette, Katie or Anne Marie so they can advise what best suits you.

Colin Dunne show in Ottawa

Now that our '10-'11 dancing year has come to a close, we are busy planning our Fall term and looking forward to welcoming our new dancers!

OPEN HOUSE

Our annual Open House offers families an opportunity to meet the teachers in the school. Current dancers will be present to demonstrate the various levels of Irish dancing. Prospective students will have an opportunity to try out a step or two in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. This offers an opportunity for attendees to get a taste for Irish dance before committing to the full term. Class times, costs and other information will be available at the Open House. A registration desk will be set up for those who choose to register.

This year there will be two separate Open House events, one for West Island and one for NDG. The details are as follows:

Summer Dance Camp - registration due by the end of this week

Our annual summer dance camp provides an opportunity for dancers from all of our locations to learn new material and improve their technique in a friendly, fun environment. The program includes warm-ups, drills, and exercises to enhance posture, strength and flexibility. The camp also promotes team spirit through interactive games and activities, allowing dancers the opportunity to explore their creative talents through choreography. The Bernadette Short School is hosting the 32nd annual Ville Marie Feis on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at John Abbott College. All dancers from the Short School should attend this competition. This is a fun day for families as there is an outdoor concert stage featuring Salty Dog, and pub beginning at noon.

Bagging Poster

St. Patrick's Day Thanks

Thank you to all dancers who helped us celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year. Your participation in shows, especially those at seniors residences and hospitals, helped to make it a special day for those less fortunate.

Thanks to those senior dancers without whose help we could not have gotten through so many shows in one week.

Our float in the parade was a great success this year, winning first prize for the Best Celtic Dancing Unit!! The Post-Parade Party had a great turn out and we hope it was a fun time for the families that attended! Many thanks to Sylvia, Palma and Valerie and their team of helpers for a successful event. The Cunningham and the Choiniere-Shields families were certainly a highlight of the entertainment at our party!

Our school also won the prize for the most Irish content in the 2nd Annual Hudson parade! Thanks very much to the girls who participated and many thanks also to the organisers of the parade and to Kerry O'Reilly who put a lot of effort into preparing our entry.

Many thanks to all the friends and families of the Bernadette Short School for supporting our fundraising efforts for the dancers going to Dublin for the World Championships.

The Bernadette Short School of Irish Dancing is pleased to announce that the 7th Annual St. Valentine’s School Competition will be held on Saturday, 12th February, 2011.

The St. Valentine’s Day School Competition is open to all students in the NDG and West Island classes, as well as those in Chateauguay (QC), Shannon (QC), and Champlain Valley (NY).

Beginners and Advanced Beginners will compete in the morning. All first-year Beginners will compete in at least one dance, and up to three. Bernadette or Marie will let the children know which dances they will do. Novice and Open (Prizewinner) competitions will be held in the afternoon. These dancers will enter in their usual Feis dance categories. Preliminary and Championship dancers will have an opportunity to dance in a solo soft shoe and solo hard shoe event for judges comments only and the judge will not rank the dancers. Dancers will have a choice of Reel or Slip Jig in the soft shoe event and Treble Jig or Hornpipe for the hard shoe event.

COSTUMES: Dancers should have already received a costume prior to the Christmas Recitals. If you did not receive one, please advise Marie or Bernadette. Dancers in Novice and Prizewinner are permitted to wear a solo dress if they have one.

“DANCE-OFF FOR CHARITY”
Please help us show our support to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. Each competitive category will have a “dance off” competition where all age groups in that category participate in an additional competition. Dancers in Beginner will dance the Reel, Advanced Beginner will dance the Slip Jig, Novice will dance the Treble Jig and Open will dance the Hornpipe. If a dancer has dances in two different categories, he or she should enter the dance-off competition in the higher category. Preliminary and Championship dancers will dance the Treble Reel. The cost to enter this competition is $10 and all proceeds will be donated to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

ADMISSION: $5 per adult. Dancers and children under 16 are free.

A Feis Café will be open and this will be an area where you can enjoy a coffee and a treat while waiting for results and awards.

COMPETITION SCHEDULE:

Morning: To start at 9:00a.m.

BEGINNER: Any dancer who started dancing in September 2010.

ADVANCED BEGINNER: Any dancer who started dancing before September 2010, but has not placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in that particular dance in Advanced Beginner Category.

Afternoon: To start at 12:00 noon

NOVICE: Any dancer who has placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in that particular dance in Advanced Beginner, but has not placed 1st in Novice.

PRIZEWINNER: Any dancer who has placed 1st in that particular dance in Novice.

Costumes:
Costumes will be fitted and distributed during classes over the next two weeks. School dresses are to be kept for the duration of the dancing year so that they may be used when required at upcoming shows and presentations, the Valentine Feis in February, St. Patrick’s Day shows and at Feis Montreal in May. The annual rental fee of $50 is due upon receipt of a dress.

Dancers should be wearing white socks with most outfits (“bubble socks” if you own them). Some dancers may have been instructed to bring black tights as well (if you are unsure, please check with Bernadette).

Reminders: soft shoes, hard shoes, socks/tights, dress/skirt, etc.

Après-Recital Treats:
We will have coffee and snacks following the show.
There will be sign-up sheets at upcoming classes for parents to bring a snack item or juice. PLEASE SIGN UP!!!

Admission:
Admission is $10 per adult. No admission charge for children under 16 years. Tickets will be available at upcoming classes.

NDG Food Bank:
In lieu of door prizes, please bring a non-perishable food item to the recital to donate to the NDG Food Bank. Please support those less fortunate in our community during this holiday season.
